Just when I thought it had died down, the wave of hype concerning the mythical chupacabra has roared back to life. Never mind that the animal discovered in the summer of 2007 has long since been confirmed to be two very real (though uncommon) animals, not a chupacabra. Never mind that the animal found a few days ago looks very similar to the first animal, and there is no reason to believe its identity is any different. No, the discoverers of the latest "chupacabra" don't care about logic! All they want is their 15 minutes of fame and publicity throughout the United States and, potentially, the whole world!
The scary thing about this story is that it has lasted far longer than 15 minutes (over 2 years, in fact). What I find shocking is that people everywhere are captivated by this sensational story despite the facts that turn confirmation of a legend into just another ill-conceived hoax. It was bad enough that news of the "chupacabra" gained media attention once, but twice? As the saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me".
Well, I'm not fooled. News Flash: The legendary chupacabra that these people so desperately want the animal they discovered to be does not exist. In fact, the only way that there will EVER be an animal called a "chupacabra" is if a previously undiscovered species of animal is found and the discoverers call it a chupacabra. Even then, it still will not be the animal depicted in popular myths.
So, to everyone out there: Just let the hype concerning the discovery of another "chupacabra" die already!
